HEL LOOKS: STYLE FROM HELSINKI

It’s always good to add a little international flavor to your fashion, so here’s a little taste of style from HEL LOOKS, a Helsinki website dedicated to some serious street style.

Each photo comes with a little editorial from the person themselves…

milena hel style

Milena (20) says, “I just bought this skirt. It has nice braces and it’s girlish. My mother has made the jacket for me many years ago. I like nail polish, vintage and clothes with high waist. A fringe gives me strength. My friends, Helsinki people, drama, summer, femininity and girlishness inspire me now.”

velentine and naniyo hel looks

These guys say they’re inspired by current Japanese styles.

And, there’s definitely no fear of mixing and matching, bright colors, and use of patterns in this city! This ensemble is tame compared to others on the website.

jermu hel looks

Even this little guy has his own attitude. Jermu (3) says, “I’m wearing an eagle t-shirt and flower socks. My cap is yellow and there is some net at the back. I like red, cars and legos.”

We like red, cars and legos too! Rock on Jermu.

DESTINATION: TANZANIA

An African safari seems to be on top of everyone’s list for summer vacations. Our pick? The Sand Rivers Selous in Tanzania.

The Camp is located in the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve, on the banks of the Rufiji River. Each room sits raised up above the water with an incredible view of the land. (Admit it – the images alone are already relaxing you.)

Luxurious, yet true to the African style, the rooms are stone and thatch, and feature simple amenities in open air suites. The best part? The ‘lodge’ only has five standard rooms, two suites, and a one-bedroom private house, so you know your stay will be quiet and intimate.

Of course, the highlight of the trip is the chance to enjoy a little safari across the reserve where you can mingle with elephants, rhinos and more! Sand Rivers also offers fly camping as an alternate to staying in the lodge. All visitors can partake in game drives, walking safaris, fishing, and boating as well.

If you were looking for a way to add a little adventure to your life… we just found it.

TUESDAY TUNES: LYKKE LI

We’re not super stoked for any new releases this week, so we thought we intro you to one of our new favorite artists, Likke Li.

lykke li

She’s Sweden’s next big thing, and if you haven’t already heard her tracks, you can listen to her album, Youth Novels, on her MySpace page.

This is one of our favorites, “I’m Good, I’m Gone’. And there’s plenty more sweet little grooves where that came from.

WE’D LIKE TO THANK THE LITTLE PEOPLE…

We’ve never seen street art like this before… in fact, it’s so small, you’ve probably never seen it either.

TWITTER STORIES

Sometimes we have some fairly nerdy tendencies… this could be one of them. If you haven’t already been sucked into the social vacuum of twitter, this might just do it.

twistori is a site that pulls any twitter updates within six categories… love, hate, think, believe, feel, and wish.

There’s everything from political ‘statements’…

To insight on drinking habits…

To random confessions.

(Yeah… we’re thinking if you’re twittering from the exam table, maybe you have other problems..?)

A little sneek peek into the secret hopes and desires of others = great Friday distraction.

JUSTIN GIUNTA’S INDUSTRIAL GLAM

We first fell for Justin Giunta’s work last year when his combination of industrial commercial lighting with gorgeous vintage crystal and glass baubles gave him some real recognition in the art and interior world…

The contrast of materials created a seriously chic outcome, and it kicked off a career that has quickly made him sought after in another industry – fashion.

ìIn my work I am always drawing parallels between art history and modern design to explore themes of fine art and commercial design. The only difference between the two seems to be where you sell it.ì

Justin’s jewelry line, Subversive Jewelry has brought him acclaim from many, and uses the same idea of mixing old and new to create glamorous, over-the-top pieces.

He jumped onto the scene this year with his fashion week debut in March, and hasn’t looked back since.

Between being tapped by Target last month to contribute to their successful designer series (in which he created the cuffs above), and consistently receiving more and more press time, Justin has officially been added to our list as one to watch.

EVER EVERLAND

From the creative Swiss duo of L/B, Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann, comes a ‘hotel’ experience unlike any other.

hotel everland location

Currently perched upon the Palais de Tokyo the Hotel Everland is an art installation turned one-room pod ‘hotel’.

hotel everland view

Here’s the deal: “The room can be booked for one night only, the mini-bar is fully stocked and included in the price, breakfast is delivered to the door and a record collection stands at ones disposal”. Um, you had us at mini-bar. That and the view make this a pretty incredible one-time opportunity.

hotel everland bedroom

The bright colors are a bit mod, the space a bit small, and windows… well, we’re pretty sure they don’t have curtains. If you can deal with all that, then get in line (behind us) to book a date.

hotel everland bath2

The hotel is only open until the end of 2008, and the chance to book is fleeting. The next time to try your luck is July 30th when reservations will be made available at a random hour on their booking page. We’ll cross our fingers for you…

WHAT WOULD YOU DO FOR $1,335?

For $1335, David Horvitz will go to the southernmost point in South America, Tierra Del Fuego, take a photograph of the ocean for you, and send it off…

tierra_del_fuego_003_b

Or, for $20, he will go to Coney Island in New York, fill an envelope with authentic Coney Island sand, and drop it in the mail.

coney island beach

For a mere $1, he will sit and watch the Pacific Ocean for one minute and document the time and date with a photo that you will receive via email. Want a little more quality time? For $24 dollars he will sit there for $24 minutes… if we had that deal, we could retire.

calbeach

We’re thinking David likes beaches. We’re also thinking he’s a genius who’s given a whole new meaning to the phrase “getting paid to do what you love.”
