Alexander Lee McQueen: Tribute

alexandermcqueen

A happy Lee McQueen showed his solidarity for model friend Kate Moss when she suffered some rough publicity.

Yesterday, the fashion world received a jolt to the heart when one of the greatest designers of our generation, Alexander McQueen, was found dead in his London flat. McQueen’s family has asked that the press respect their privacy at this time. But yet, those who knew him mourn. And even for those who didn’t, he counted as a true couturier, what fashion should be at its best, most beautiful and most provocative.

A tragic loss…Hudson Jeans reflects on some of his beautiful creations of recent years.

come back, oh to me.

Electrelane ‘To the East’

Electrelane is one of my favorite bands, well were (R.I.P). They were formed in Brighton in 1998 and their music was influenced by a wide range of musicians including Sonic Youth and The Velvet Underground. The band had exceptionally strong feminist and political views but strayed away from empowering their fans with this. I was introduced to ‘To The East’ when my best friend was traveling in India and had it as her myspace profile song. I played it on repeat to remind myself of her and now when I listen to it, I become overpowered by her presence.

Come back, come back, oh to me <3

Faces and Looks that Caught Our Eye / Stripy Girls and More, Part II

It’s smooth and sleek these days for girls around town, at least in terms of hair blown with just a hint of wave or partially pulled back. I noticed at least ten girls with buns and top knots and versions in between the two at the Sonia Rykiel party at Bobo. Model and deejay for the evening Chanel Iman told me she prefers a “neat look.” And those girls who wore their hair down, like models Hanneli Mustaparta and Siri Tollerod did not over enhance the wave: just enough with a dab of shine.  Gossip Girl actress Leighton Meester likes more curl with her chestnut hair, but it certainly wasn’t a wild as the mane of her mystery date, seen here with her in the photo. Mark Indelicato– Betty’s nephew from Ugly Betty-- posed in his own perfectly coiffed ‘do.

Stripey Babes and Gossip Girl Mum… in the West Village

IMG_2129

Actress Kelly Rutherford – aka Serena Van Der Woodsen’s mum — from Gossip Girl

“They copy me all the time! Finally I said, ‘Look, if you want your girls to wear Sonia Rykiel from H&M, let’s let them have the real thing!’” So said Nathalie Rykiel, who presided over an A-list social crowd the other night at Bobo, a restaurant in a townhouse on West 10th Street in Greenwich Village.  Leighton Meester, who plays Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl grazed in and seemed the perfect muse for the stripy tunics and berets that Sonia Rykiel now makes both in the classic line and, coming this spring, for H&M.

Meester, actress Kelly Rutherford — in a Rykiel white cashmere sweater — social gals like Amanda Hearst, thirty-something Euro tycoons in slick navy jackets, and a few motley stylists jammed into two floors of Bobo, hitting the full open bar and munching on the trays of crab salad going `round…difficult to move without spilling some champs on a mate on the narrow staircase. Still on a cold NYC’s winter’s night, nothing warms the cockles more than free flowing free cocktails.

Trend alert! Don’t be surprised if you spot girls from Broadway to Venice Beach in Rykiel’s “Mon Pull” lightweight black sweaters with the words spelled out in rhinestones. Ditto for pink and black stripey numbers, leather cuffs in Easter egg colors with rhinestone snaps, and berets of all hues with silver bullets in them. All that’s missing is a hot pair of Hudson jeans to top it off.

’21st Century’ is the new exhibition of work by William Eggleston, one of the most influential photographers of the last half-century. His ability to find beauty in the banal has changed the way we look at the world. He has remained working in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee where he photographs the everyday: parking lots, diners, hotel rooms, anything that is seen and accessed by everyone living in his environment. It is from these ‘ordinary’ documents of life that the powerful significance is revealed. It’s great to see what Eggleston visions as ‘photography’ in the 21st century. It’s an interesting collection (saying that I am a much bigger fan of his older work!) and really shows what it is that makes Eggleston’s work so profound. What’s more, it’s also showing in New York! Yey!

The exhibition runs through until the 27th February at the Victoria Miro Gallery, London and is also showing at Cheim & Read, New York until the 13th…So be quick!!

Say no more

The East London nightlife is a super way to experience all night dancing and having lots of fun! Saturday night I went to a club on Kingsland Road called ‘Say No More’ which presents the best electronic music of the moment. It’s also a great place to get your photo taken (mostly to set as your new facebook ‘default’ photo the next day) and meet new people.

‘Say no more’ @ On the rocks, Kingsland Road.

S&M

I woke up today not really remembering what or how I had gotten home…I remember a lot of rum and a lot of crying (the crying was clearly un-intentional!) I got called up from work saying that I was needed to do a closing shift leaving the rest of my Saturday free to do whatever I wanted…Unfortunately the hangover seemed to be controlling my brain, and all I really managed to get up and do was to eat! Luckily I got a call from my friend, Rosie, who had also participated in similar drinking/crying activities, and she accompanied me on the hunt to find some tasty winter warming food.

We headed into town and as if by magic we discovered ‘S&M’, a traditional English cafe, famous for is sausage and mash (explains the cafe’s name pretty well!) As we sat patiently (as patient as you can be with a hangover DYING for anything solid to ram down your gob) we noticed how good their mugs were! I made Rosie get a hot drink just so I could photograph one of them. Annoyingly they gave us ‘sip’ which was the worst word out of all the mugs. I wanted ‘gulp’ or ‘slurp’…something that was a bit more disgusting, yet realistic to emphasize a Saturday morning hangover.

Melanie Manchot

Melanie Manchot’s new exhibition ‘Celebration’ explores individual and collective identity. Manchot is a London based artist working with photography, film and video.

Manchot worked with residents living on a selected street in East London over a 6-month period culminating in a day-long party and the making of a new film. She documents the event with a single tracking shot, capturing residents as they gather in front of the camera. The film bridges still and moving images to look at the process of forming and dissolving a group project. It’s an interesting show that asks what is it like to be part of a community and how is it formed.

Celebration

The exhibition also includes a series of portraits of individuals that form part of this community. The exhibition is part of Gallery’s education programme which looks at how the gallery communicates with the public and its community.

The Queen of F**k Off Island in NYC!

Vanessa-Paradis-Chanel-chanel-2561066-1024-768

Vanessa Paradis, the new face of Rouge Coco de Chanel

Coco Chanel always said a woman should never leave the house without lipstick. Economic indicators have proven that in time of war and economic collapse women tend to buy more red lipstick. And just in time for Spring, Vanessa Paradis – French chanteuse, sometimes actress and Johnny Depp’s main bird–will officially become the face of Rouge Coco de Chanel, an unquestionably crimson lip shade, the topper of thirty shades that Coco herself would have worn.

Next week, the usually press shy Paradis will be the guest of honor at a VIP Chanel dinner in NYC, filled with a guest list including a bevy of male artists like Aaron Young and Tom Sachs. No word on whether she follows fine art, but she just released her greatest hits album in Europe and the States and her Johnny is now in LA shooting a documentary on Keith Richards with rock legend Patti Smith.  Here’s what’s on record about Madame Paradis: She and Johnny call their private island in the Caribbean “F**k Off Island.”  And she told the London Times. “I don’t have any famous neighbors and if I did, I’d avoid them.” It just proves that mystery is sexy.  From her lips to ours, so is Coco rouge lipstick. It’s a sickness, a manic weakness!

All I’ve managed to do since returning to London is sleep for many MANY hours and wish I was back drinking tea and eating Oreo cake in Brooklyn. I can’t seem to get my trip out of my head, which makes perfect sense because it was bloody amazing! I have had my ‘New York’ playlist stuck on repeat, listening to all the great songs that I was lucky enough to discover through the constant playing from my friend Ioana. I therefore felt it only right to post one of the songs as my ‘song of the moment’. My post on Sunday included a photograph of the ‘Beach House’ video launch party. In the post I mentioned a song called ‘Silver Soul’ (guess what song I’m going to post). Yes, ‘Silver Soul’ is without a doubt my song of the moment although ‘Walk in the Park’ had a winning chance but had no music video!

Beach House is my new best friend and I already got myself a couple of tickets to their UK show in June. Oh how excited I am!

(twitter: Beach house…their music, their videos, they will make you obsessed!)

A Landscape of Ghosts in Photographs

92Y_Invite

Photographer Adam Golfer visited his worst family fears in this exhibition

Photographer Adam Golfer resembles a combination of director and visual auteur, Wes Anderson, and an eager, smiling “Where’s Waldo?” He’s equally humble, yet bursts with energy when asked about his project, “Kin,” now on display at the 92nd Street Y. “I’m going back to shoot more,” he tells me of this body of work that examines the lives and environments of twenty-something Germans, the third generation descendants of Nazi Germany, just as Golfer himself is a third generation descendant of Holocaust survivors, his grandparents.

Golfer, who often shoots for W and Art + Auction, took on this personal project to bridge the gap between generations after genocide. He explained that these German kids shared a lot of the same interests and outlooks. “They became my friends,” he tells me.

The photos draw you in like a teen dream fantasy-scape, often lush, yet civilized — a welcoming beauty that hides the past. Says Golfer, “Kin is my journey back to a country that scarred my family. I am reaching out to people of my own generation in an attempt to grasp their situation and the manner in which they relate to their past and future. The project is an inquiry into the potential of future generations from opposite sides of a conflict to come together rather than be held apart by the weight of history.”

Amen.

Exhibition on view through March 11th at the 92nd Street Y, 1395 Lexington Ave. Call ahead for viewing hours, 212-415-5597.

Joseph Arthur Rocks Troubadour with Ben Harper… then NYC!

Joseph Arthur, live at City Winery

Anyone “in the know” in the music scene has been tipped off to the music of Joseph Arthur. Never heard of him? Bullocks! His tunes have graced the soundtrack of Shrek and love scenes on TV’s Grey’s Anatomy. But lest you think him uncool, better think again. He’s a musician’s musician, discovered over a decade ago by Peter Gabriel. When he tours in Seattle, you’ll spot members of Pearl Jam; in New York, Michael Stipe and Bono.

He’s currently touring the States. He produces so many albums, it’s hard to keep track. But to see him live, is to really hear his genius. The guy works with various guitars and  pedal loops so he can literally “step in” parts of tracks as he wishes. In between lyrics, Arthur often lifts a paintbrush, erecting a mural in the back of the stage. Since the Haiti earthquake, he’s sold his latest stage creations post show, all profits going to the victims of this disaster.

Last Thursday, he invited musician Ben Harper up on stage with him at the Troubadour in LA, bringing the house down. The next night, he hit City Winery, a sold-out show at NYC’s newest intimate music venue from one of the former owners of the famed Knitting Factory of the Nineties.

Some call Arthur a musical savant. I would agree, but decide for yourself. Videos featured here, shot live at City Winery for Hudson Jeans, and his website features some fierce wordplay. Check out NOTES FROM THE ROAD: http://www.josepharthur.com/

Hi/bye NYC.

Green Point

I spoke to my housemates this week and it turns out that I didn’t get food poisoning before I left for New York; it was actually mouse poisoning. MOUSE POISONING meaning we have mice! Both of them took it in turns vomiting aggressively over the toilet whilst pest control tackled the little rodents that had been diseasing our house! On a lighter note, I was finally getting better and was taking full advantage of New York happy hour (which seems to be all the time?). I also discovered that your portion of a ‘double shot’ is actually more like a double glass compared to our poor excuse of a drink back home. Wednesday afternoon and Chris had a couple of appointments to see some studio apartments over in Greenpoint. Two pretty nice apartments although the more expensive one seemed to be the worst (and the dirtiest). We then headed down to the water so Chris could show me the view of the City. This was my first year staying in Brooklyn and it was nice to be able to look at the skyline from afar rather than to be stuck amongst it. How pretty!

Beach House

That evening Chris and Ioana (Ioana is my lovely French friend whom I met whilst working in American Apparel back in London) took me to see the live screening of Beach House’s video for their new song ‘Teen Dream’. The new album will be issued with a DVD featuring a music video for each song from the album. A different director has made each video, all very young and very talented. My favourite was ‘Silver Soul,’ which consisted of female dancers skating round, painted head to toe in silver. Beautifully done.

Atlantic Vintage

As well as buying my Mac for super super cheap out here, I wanted to have a good rummage around your thrift stores for some American vintage classics (completely unsuccessful might I add!) I did manage to find this jacket and knitted jumper for a sweet $40 for the pair. Atlantic Attic is located on Metropolitan Avenue between Graham and Humbolt. They also play great music…I was lucky enough to have the entire Beyonce collection during my 40 minute stay!

Photobooth

I first came to New York 5 years ago when I was 17. I remember the first thing I wanted to do when I got here was to cross Brooklyn Bridge by foot. The structure and height of the bridge really fascinated me. Once I crossed it, I by chance discovered a diner down in DUMBO called ‘Bubby’s.’ They do great food and the service is top notch. I’ll make sure to take a trip there every time I come to New York. Aside from the food and the amazing view they have a great vintage photo booth hidden behind the bar. You can’t find these anywhere in London so it’s a great fun to get them done, and it only cost $3! Bargain! (Arnault, Ioana and Joseph)

Don't give up.

Colour, font and simple meanings. 3 of my favourite things to photograph in New York. I saw this printed on the side of a truck and loved the bold text combined with the bold colours and how it emphasized the ‘bold’ meaning.

It’s been a great week visiting New York. I will be back soon…I’m off home…I will see you there!
