Denim Diary: Chelsea Leyland, Deejay, It Girl

Deejay Chelsea Leyland models her Hudson skinnies on her roof!

One of the most sought after deejays around NYC, Chelsea Leyland, 23, was born in London. A trained actress, she landed in NYC to study the craft further but took up a deejay side gig that has blossomed. She literally lays down a range of tracks — from the Rolling Stones to Jay-Z, Depeche Mode to Stevie Wonder — all over. You’ll find her spinning tunes at parties for photographer Ben Watts at Soho House NYC, and for private soirees at Vito Schnabel’s studio. She’s also setting the summer groove with cool reggae at the Surf Lodge Friday nights in Montauk near the surf beach on the far end of the Hamptons. She LOVES her Hudson jeans, which she’s modeled for us in these images. So we asked….

What is your favorite pair of Hudson jeans?
My favorite pair were the navy “jegging” ones. I really like them. I’ve worn them everywhere.

Where have these jeans been?
I went to lunch with a friend at Cafe Gitane in the Jane Hotel. And, I went for a drink at Hotel Delmano in Williamsburg. It’s pretty much my favorite bar in New York, it is so beautiful. It is the same style Socialista used to be. It’s created to look old. You got to that bar, and you are no longer chasing a party. You make a commitment to go there and you stay there. It is like a movie set. You watch all the different characters come in…old, young. The barman is the best, with the best cool little style. He is chosen for that place. It’s an artistic place. Before Hotel Delmano,  I went to dinner at Franny’s at Fort Greene — all organic. Farm to table, it’s the most incredible food. I am considering moving to Fort Greene so I can eat there every week. I try  to take everyone I know there. I love the clam pizza. It’s crispy and covered in garlic. They do this Italian sausage dish with broccoli rabe. Incredible pastas as well. It’s all rich food but because they do it with delicious greens, they literally change their menu every week.

You look great in the jeans. Do you work out?
It is my DNA. I did pilates yesterday but I haven’t exercised for eight months, until today. My stomach is killing me. It’s power pilates.

What pieces in your wardrobe look great with the jeans?
There’s a top that I’ve worn for many years: a wifebeater that is six or seven years old, so thin you can see through it. It’s got safey pins holding it together. I always wear short tops with jeans.  It shows my tummy. My friends tell me to throw it away. I was with someone in Thailand who told me to throw it out. He said, “Can’t you just get another one?” I’ve travelled everywhere in that top, I love it. It’s like those thin t-shirts that you’ve washed so many times that it just becomes like that.

I also wore them with a Def Leppard t-shirt. I got it ages ago in Star Struck on Greenwich Avenue. I wore them with a body top from Screaming Mimis. It’s kind of black but faded, so it’s like the same color as the jeans. And I wore them with my leather jacket on a day that started out cold and got really hot. The jacket is from Camden. It’s an old biker one. I’ve had it for ten years and I’ve put a bunch of studs on it. Thrush Metal. I wear the badge on the jacket that says Thrush Metal. It is my friend’s band.

What shoes do  you like to wear with Hudson jeans?
My Doc Martens. They are black steel-tipped so if someone tries to attack me I can totally attack their legs. I got them in the Doc Marten shop in Camden in London.

Spike Jonze Incognito for His Film “I’m Here” at Milk Studios

Director Spike Jonze is a romantic. He must be. Not only did he drift in and out of his film screening of “I’m Here” last weekend at the Milk Studios all-day rave in New York, but he did so in a black newsboy cap and shades. The film, a commission by Absolut Vodka grabs you by the heart, or at least  by the limb, in the tale of Sheldon and Francesca, two robots living in Los Angeles. Sheldon falls in love with her and risks all to save her life and spirit. Francesca possesses a joie de vivre, so she drives a car (against the law for robots) and loses an arm body surfing at a rock show.

“The Lost Trees” —  a fictional rock band formed by Yeah Yeah Yeah’s guitarist Nick Zinner — played the music in “I’m Here.” They also performed a live set at Milk. See video clip above. But you didn’t have to be there to catch this nifty heart-tugging short flick.  Jonze said it’s based loosely on Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree.” Just click here: I’M HERE

No Kind Words.

A long-rumored collaboration we have all been waiting for. South London indie boys The Maccabees are back and joined by electronic rapper Roots Manuva for this track featured on the band’s current album Wall Of Arms under the title “No Kind Words”. Recently re-named “Empty Vessels”, it was released as a single back in November, but the video to the track has only just surfaced.

“If you’ve got no kind words to say, you should say nothing more at all”. Well I am going to be kind and say this is a fine re-working of an already great song.
