Jack White gets close to Alison Mosshart aka “Baby Ruthless” while performing with the Dead Weather
The place was packed like sardines Wednesday night as the Dead Weather played a secret gig at Don Hill’s in Soho in NYC. Friends of the bar’s new co-owner Nur Khan and friends of friends spread the word in the newly painted rock institution that has not yet officially re-opened. (Khan and some pals also hosted a secret show for Turbogeist back in June.) But, last night all people could buzz about was the chemistry between lead singers Jack White and Alison Mosshart, originally the front woman of the Kills. Jack nicked Mosshart to fill in once for his other band the Raconteurs when his voice gave out during a performance last year at a time when the Kills served as the opening band. Rumor has it that Mosshart has not performed with her Kills partner Jamie Hince in a while because Kate Moss prefers that Jamie (Moss’ beau) keep his distance. In any case, it was a hot show and the band recently released a new album, Sea of Cowards, in the U.S. and Europe.
Check out this web link for a rad interview with the band. Who knew that Jack White had such an adorable, witty, bad boy personality? He’s not a goth depressive after all.

The Dead Weather
One of Northern Ireland’s most notorious rock bands return after a 6-year much missed break. Ash first appeared on the music scene back in 1992 and have since then sold over 8 million records (they apparently took their name from the first word they liked in the dictionary!). “Carnal Love” is taken from the new album A-Z, which features 26 songs (for each letter of the alphabet) and the video was made by the very up and coming London born director Alex Turvey who has previously worked with Jefferson Hack’s, British style magazine, Dazed.
Liza Colby demonstrates how to get your groove on!
Liza Colby and her talented band — including a real blues guitarist and malleable drummer who backed her up perfectly — threatened the crowd at Rose Live in Williamsburg Brooklyn. “If you don’t move, we’re going to be really pissed off!” At least that’s the gist of it, if not an exact quote. For the song “Shake”, captured here in the Hudson video, Liza walked through the crowd and got lasses in short frocks to move their hips. She demonstrated the sway and shake! Check it out and do try this at home to shake off the heat. (Liza Colby Sound performs next Tuesday, August 10th, 9 pm, at Lakeside Lounge, Avenue B, between 10th and 11th Streets.)

Ever hear of Liza Colby? If not, you will soon! She’s a force of nature who sounds like a mix of Feist and young Tina Turner, but since she writes her own songs, definitely pure Liza in the end. She’s performed on tour as a back up singer for Dennis Leary and last week she did an intimate but soul fused show at Rose Live in Williamsburg. I asked about her va va voom outfit. “My boyfriend picked it from a mannequin in a store in Long Beach!” With the confidence of a star about to burst, Liza brought the mannequin’s discards to life.
Born in Hartford Connecticut, she reigns from a musical family: the brother’s a musician; dad is Grammy award winning producer; and mum used to sing with the Persuasions. Her influences include Ruth Brown, Ray Charles, Bob Marley, Al Green, and Stevie Wonder. And, she’s performing next Tuesday, August 10th at 9pm at Lakeside Lounge (Ave B, between 10th and 11th)
Better catch her now before she blows up! For evidence, see video COMING IN WEDNESDAY’S POST, where Liza shows off her moves to her song “SHAKE!”
