Stefania Pia: Break Out Your Inner Shaman!
Do you believe in magic? Apparently, jewelry designer/spontaneous artist/gal about town Stefania Pia does. Her latest exhibit and jewelry collection entitled “Someday I’ll Find You,” now at EVA for the next month, not only seems tied to romantic dreams but to the notion that each object possesses a spirit.
Pia, a petite blond who prefers brocaded vintage and “dare to kiss me” nerd glasses, spent most of the summer scouring flea markets for the show, picking up keys, doll parts, and religious symbols. Pia, a Northern Italian who infers from both her native traditions as well as rebellion against them, chooses objects that resonate with her soul in some way. She repaints them– sometimes in neon — and combines them into one-of-a kind necklaces. To kick off the collection — a bounty both eccentric and chic– she also created wall collages for the store (as seen in the invitation above) and combined forces with musicians Brain McPeck and Matt McAuley. The boys, as part of a duo called “TV Baby” performed live at the opening, as if to inject audio spells into Pia’s jewelry.
To quote:
“It considers the concept of every object having a soul or spirit imparted to it both by its creator and by those who use the object throughout its existence. The pieces in your work all start with found objects. Through them we can reflect on their past and lives of those whose hands they have past and the imprint left on them by their former possessors. Musically we will try summon or recall both the spirit of the objects and those whose lives they may have touched and at same time connect them with you and your effect on them.” —TV Baby
