Bring on the Penny Lane

This spring, it isn’t enough to decorate your outfit with necklaces and rings – your tendrils need a bit of flair as well. Here to help out are feather extensions, which have become the latest must- have fashion accessory, calling for a return to the hippie era of style. What began as a side project for some hair stylists out of their apartments has become a celebrity obsession. Famous faces including Heidi Klum, Drew Barrymore, Vanessa Hudgens, and Selena Gomez livened up their locks with feathers this season, in a range of ways. While Selena actually had her hair adorned with a feather extension, Vanessa decided to test the trend in a more temporary kind of way, with an extra long feather earring. As with any trend, salons and stores are making it extremely simple for the public to replicate the look. Services range from $25-$100 depending on the style, but with a bit of DIY brilliance, it’s easily to test out the look for minimal investment. We’d suggest accessorizing your return to the 70s with a perfect pair of HUDSON flares and channeling your best Penny Lane.

The Royal Wedding

On 29th April the Royal Wedding is taking place in London, England.   The nation is waiting with bated breath to see which dress designer Prince William’s bride Kate – or Catherine as she will now be known – has chosen. But equally of interest on the day will be the outfits worn by the much-envied Wedding guests.

It’s highly likely that, what with the heatwave in London at the moment and the popularity of grown-up florals this season, a bouquet of refreshing, demure Spring-like dresses will be making an appearance.  (Brollies at the ready, though, for the expected drizzle!)

Royal Wedding

For Royal enthusiasts, aka commoners without invites, there are a smattering of quirky events to offer across the capital…

The day before the Wedding, Maiden, a boutique in vibrant Shoreditch, and cult cake baker Miss Cakehead are putting on a ‘Will and Cake’ shop.  Stock up on fun, patriotic treats such as Union Jack cupcakes and Wedding-themed cake pops by Molly Bakes.

Department store Harvey Nichols is offering a quintessential Royal Tea complete with sandwiches, cakes and scones for £30, which also includes the keepsake of a humorous mug.  Just the ticket after a day of shopping!  We reckon booking well in advance is essential.

Meanwhile at the Victoria and Albert Museum in the evening of 29th April visitors are invited to say ‘I Do’ to a Royal Wedding experience with a difference – this one is Victorian themed.  Based around the celebrations of Edward VII and Alexandra’s 1863 wedding there will be bunting, sing-a-longs and trifle as well as Wedding snaps to pose for.

But for those wanting to make an irreverent statement, there’s the An-Tea Establishment Afternoon Tea experience at the Met bar.  Enjoy Sex Pistols inspired cocktails, ‘quiche a la fergie’, rhubarb & custard cupcakes and organic compote roly-poly.  God save the Queen!

Summer Music Festival Must Haves

Summer music festival days are fully upon us!

With Coachella kick starting the party last weekend (we are still recovering), you will find that there is definitely more music and way more fun in the sun ahead of us. Here are a few festivals that will surely help maintain that tan and keep that Coachella buzz going:

Silverlake Jubilee: This festival is right around the corner-May 21st + 22nd to be exact!  The festival is put on by  non-profit organization, Los Angeles Arts and Athletics Alliance (LAAAA), and is chock full of indie up and comers including Rainbow Arabia and Crystal Antlers.

Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival: Road trip anyone? This 3 day weekender at Golden Gate park in San Francisco has got not only good music but a cool summer breeze! With headliners like “MUSE” and “Arcade Fire” this festival will surely make up for the bands you missed at Coachella. Why not rent a cute little convertible for the weekend and cruise down the PCH.

Sunset Strip Music Festival: Right off the infamous sunset strip this rock n’ roll festival closes down the streets (literally) from St.Vicente to Doheny and rocks out non-stop for 3 days! With past acts such as  the Smashing Pumpkins and Kid Cudi this festival brings out the BIG guns of rock + pop. No line up as of yet but Motely Crue is the tribute band for the 1st day. So that’s a start.

We put together a little inspiration kit for your upcoming festival festivities. You know what mother always said, “never leave home with out your boots, turbans, jeans, and sunnies.” Happy festival going!

HUDSON After Hours – NYC

Pops of spring in the form of brightly colored denim welcomed guests to HUDSON jean’s latest After Hours celebration along with a special appearance by creative director Ben Taverniti! Of the many delights at the showroom, including the brand new designs by Georgia May Jagger, guests were gushing over the pastel print shorts for summer, as well as the bright red capris. While the zipper accents caused more than a few fashion gasps, it was the triple zips that had style mavens entering into an obvious fit of obsession. Bloggers including Gemma Rowlands of Fade to Black, Christina Caradona of Trop Rouge, Amy Chandra of Midtown Girl, Kristin Booker of Fashion.Style.Beauty, Sonia Evers of Runway Hippie, Misha of The Fab Chick, Bianca Posterli of Modelinia, and Keiko Lynn enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with fashion friends while chatting with Ben about all things jean related. Birthday girl Rajni Jacques provided the tunes while Double Cross mixed up the cocktails including a Capri Punch, St Tropez Bloom, and Mirabella Caipiroska. To add to the swoon worthy denim he created, Ben provided more than a few jean pointers to know during the evening, including the fact that in four years, HUDSON has developed over 7,000 washes! The more you know …

Sunset Strip – Rock n’ Roll History

Sunset Strip is probably one of the most well known Rock n’ Roll streets of all time. No doubt a strip most infamous for it’s music venues and riotous bars (think the Roxy, House of Blues and Chateau Marmont) but also… it’s got style. Everyone from Guns N’ Roses to The Sex Pistols have graced the sunset strip with their lust for life. Groupies  have flocked from all over the world, dressed to impress, in order to catch a glance or snag a backstage invite from their  favorite band.  Remember that scene in Almost Famous at the RIOT HYATT? That is right in the heart of the Sunset Strip and is also the location of where Ozzy Osbourne threw a TV off the balcony. From bellbottoms to metal studded jackets, this strip has seen it’s fair share of fashion misfits as well as fashion icons. Even your most sought out vintage band tee quite possibly originated from the sunset strip, and most definitely did some major damage during its time. How else did those oh so perfect snags and holes get there?

P.J. Clarke’s – A Historic Water Hole

Walk down any street in New York City and you’re guaranteed to pass a number of bars including dive venues, speakeasies and after work hot spots. While certain watering holes come and go, a select few venues pass the test of time (and ever increasing rent prices) to cement their presence on the city streets.
One such historic watering hole is P.J. Clarke’s on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Through the ages, influential individuals like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Buddy Holly, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Jackie O. have walked through the doors, grown to love the venue, and expressed their adoration for the establishment.
If the records speak the truth, Steven A. Walker took control of the location in 1884, but it was an Irish immigrant named Patrick J. Clarke who gave the bar its name. A man named Mr. Duneen owned a saloon on the corner of 55th and Third Avenue, and employed a man named Patrick who would go on to eventually take over the location from him, rename it and introduce Manhattan society to P.J. Clarke’s. From there, 915 Third Avenue became an institution of delicious burgers and beer, celebrated by many and revered by all.
Come for the burgers, stay for the stories and drink in the history. Order a Gin Rickey like Fitzgerald, a scotch like Humphrey Bogart, or a bourbon and water like Sinatra – relishing in the fact that one New York City legend has stayed true to its beginnings.
