Toasting to TriBeCa Film Festival

Though New Yorkers already count themselves lucky enough to enjoy a varied selection of limited release films as compared to the rest of the country, the TriBeCa Film Festival provides an opportunity for directors, actors, and fans to come together in appreciation for the art form – and the city that inspires so many. Originally founded as a response to the terrorist attacks as a way to bring focus back to the neighborhood, the experience, which was created by Jane Rosenthal, Robert De Niro and Craig Hatkoff has turned into an annual opportunity to bring together those who create and those who appreciate. What began as a five day festival with 150,000 attendees has turned into twelve days of film, panels, and events drawing the attention of over three million individuals. Each year the excitement grows, and in 2011, the festival crowned their very first video game, expanding the set barriers of the TriBeCa Film Festival into new realms!

Fleet Week Takes Manhattan

Image via New York magazine

Anyone who’s watched Sex and the City has heard of Fleet Week, but the insinuated meaning of the annual occurrence – sailors taking over the city’s street and women flocking to meet them – is hardly the reality of seven day experience. In truth, Fleet Week serves as an opportunity to honor the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps and show them a bit of hospitality in the big city. During deployment, ships dock in major cities, including New York, to allow sailors a bit of a respite to enjoy tourist attractions, leading to an overwhelming number of uniforms around the Big Apple. With an insurgence of appreciation for those guarding our waters, the city turns into a veritable Navy obsessed environment, resulting in celebration in the form of flyovers and air shows. If you’re in the city this Fleet Week, show your appreciation for our U.S. Navy and Marine Corps and all they do for the country!

Summer Picnic Guide

Los Angeles is definitely blessed with perfect picnic weather, not too hot and not too cold, but just right. The basics for any solid picnic is a no brainer: finger friendly foods, a large blanket, lots of napkins and the quintessential summer cocktails! If you want to get extra fancy, you can always add in plates, utensils and cups (All recyclable and biodegradable, of course). As for ‘what to wear’, you can throw on your favorite comfy maxi dress, a pair of relaxed chinos, woven sandals and a floppy sun hat…oh and don’t forget the shades!

Since location is everything in LA, here are some prime locations to get your picnic on:
Griffith Park: Located in Los Feliz and can pretty much accommodate any sized picnic party. This vast oasis is home to the LA zoo, horse trails and the observatory (hello, best view in town). With such amenities, your picnic is just the beginning of an amazing all-day, action-packed adventure.

Elysian Park: Yes, home of the legendary “Love in LA” peace celebration in the 1960’s. Elysian Park is filled with not only history, but awesome hiking trails and beautifully arranged plants. A great setting for any picnic addict – you might even get a view of Dodger Stadium if you venture far enough!

The Beach: From Venice to Manhattan to Malibu, the beach is always a good option. For non-grass lovers and for those that prefer a cool breeze and front row ocean views, this is perfect! You can literally plop down your blanket anywhere, but the best option for sure is the fire pits! Can’t go wrong with a sunset and s’mores…YUM!

Cinespia: Operated only in the summer time, this picnic + movie deal is something everyone in LA should try at least once! Hosted in the iconic Hollywood Forever cemetery, this event screens some of the best classic films such as “Young Frankenstein” and “Airplane”. The major bonus is that it’s BYOB, so while the lines may be long, it’s absolutely worth the wait!

What to Rock at a Rooftop BBQ

Summer in the city lends to languid afternoons in the park, brunches outside, and late nights spent enjoying the warm temperatures. But of all the essential summer city activities, it’s rooftop BBQs that garner the most excitement. With rooftop access at an all time premium, well planned outfits for rooftop adventures are so necessary, requiring easy transition from day to night. What may begin as a day spent tanning on tar beach turns into evening grilling and night drinking. Layer HUDSON Hampton Cuffed shorts in blue with your best swimsuit, and top it off with a loose and flowing tee. Be sure to also pack a sweater for the chilly nights!

Shakespeare’s Globe

One of the great joys of the British summer has to be taking a stroll along the Southbank and ending up at Shakespeare’s iconic Globe for some open air theater. It was the first purpose-built theater in London, constructed in 1576 by actor-manager James Burbage. Shakespeare was a part of the resident troupe in the 1580s, and although he may have acted in the second Globe – a rebuilt version after the theater fire of 1613 – it is thought he never wrote for it. After the closure of all the theaters under England’s Puritan administration in 1642, in 1644 it was demolished to make room for tenements.

The reconstruction of the Globe in 1997, initiated by American actor and director Sam Wanamaker has ensured that the iconic theater has become a well-loved landmark of London’s landscape. Standing just a few hundred yards from the original Globe, visitors can enjoy plays, tours, exhibitions and courses. As You Like It and Much Ado About Nothing have just opened and while it sounds unglamorous, there’s surely no better way to see Shakespeare’s works than standing in the yard. Standing tickets cost £5.00.

Chelsea Flower Show

Chelsea Flower Show

The Chelsea Flower show opens on 24th May so there’s no better time to rock a floral. Starting with a pair of classic Hudson jeans and a vest, layer up bouquet after bouquet. A punk vibe will ensure the look doesn’t become too saccharine – clashing floral prints in similar hues seems to be the way to go this season. If you can’t bear clashing or don’t feel brave enough for all-over blossoms, dip a toe in with a silk scarf or a printed boot and you’ll find this trend so much more wearable.

Fleet Week Nautical Inspiration

It’s easy to go overboard with the nautical trend. Stripes, brass details, woven accessories and knots are all indicative of this season’s sailor inspired obsession, and when done right, the look is chic and classic. Start with bright red Hudson May Skinny Cropped Jeans and build on the maritime moment. Add a bit of edginess thanks to a zipper accent, a touch of feminism from youthful friendship bracelets, and sophistication thanks to tasteful black pumps. Nautical done right, without going overboard.
