What to Wear to Glastonbury

Glastonbury 2011

Everyone’s got their tents ready and the weather’s looking gloomy – this can only mean one thing. Glastonbury is here.

The festival was started in 1970 the day after Jimi Hendrix died and ever since Worthy Farm has become arguably the UK’s best known country residence. Musical highlights of this year’s festival include headliners Beyoncé and Morrissey, cult bands such as Warpaint and Anna Calvi and mega groups Hercules and Love Affair and Queens of the Stone Age. But never mind the music; everyone knows that at Glastonbury it’s as much about the fashion as it is the music.

For the authentic Glastonbury look it’s all about a pair of cuffed Hudson shorts, some sturdy waterproof boots or wellies and whatever top you don’t mind dowsing in mud. Add a cross-body bag in a tan brown for festival essentials (camera, phone, sanitizer…) and, for a hint of glamour, a pair of sunglasses and a classic parka à la Kate Moss and Sienna Miller, stalwarts of the Glastonbury scene.

Summer in the City

With the arrival of June 21st comes the official beginning of summer, which gives city residents a short window of time to cram in as many warm weather excursions as possible. Weekend trips to the Hamptons and Fire Island may be already planned, but for those who are enjoying a stay-cation this summer, there’s hardly a lack of fun to be found.

  • Two of NYC’s hottest ice cream trucks are leaning towards the brick and mortar route to accommodate the sheer number of sweet treat lovers. Lucky East Village residents have both the Van Leeuwen and Big Gay Ice Cream stores opening shop on E 7th street this month!
  • As a celebration of the debut of Section 2 of the High Line, The Lot is a temporary space featuring public art, free events, along with a selection of food trucks including Coolhaus, Kelvin Natural Slush Co., Red Hook Lobster, Taim Mobile, and The Taco Truck. Currently, Tom Colicchio’s Colicchio & Sons created an outdoor bar showcasing a special beer made specifically for the High Line, which makes it a clear must-try.  The Lot at the High Line is open daily from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM Sunday through Wednesday, and 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM Thursday through Saturday.
  • If you’re desperate for sand, pick one of the Water Taxi Beaches and set up shop for the day. Governors Island, Long Island City, and the South Street Seaport each boast their own versions of the fake beach, along with the requisite summer cook out snacks like hot dogs and hamburgers.
  • When the heat just becomes absolutely unbearable, throw your beach towel and sunscreen into a bag and trek up to the Bronx to check out this year’s Floating Pool at Barretto Point Park. Originally a barge, the pool enjoyed a renovation a few years ago to help city residents deal with the concrete summer jungle. Now, each summer the Floating Pool Lady serves as a respite for residents, taking up residency on the waterways of one of NYC’s boroughs.

Father’s Day London

For something a bit different this Father’s Day why not take the opportunity to get out of the centre of London? Guaranteed there will be queues for the usual London haunts like The Natural History Museum and The London Eye so for real quality time with your old man the best bet is to head to the borough of Richmond upon Thames. Just a hop away on the district line or London overground service, you’ll feel like you’ve taken a holiday from the hustle and bustle of London’s tourist hotspots. Taking a walk along the Thames canal and (fingers crossed) soaking up the sun is a far nicer way to spend a Sunday afternoon.Verge off from the canal path and join up with the high street via this idyllic country scene. Once you’ve well and truly stomped around the town reward yourselves with a well-deserved meal at one of the lively pubs on Richmond Green. Surely there’s no better way to treat your Dad than by getting a round in?

Father’s Day in New York

After all he’s gone through and done for you, dear old Dad needs a bit of appreciation shown to him. Though said father should feel the love all year round, there’s no better day than Father’s Day to give him an extra bit of attention. For city dwellers, it’s the perfect excuse to indulge in a few of your favorite past times with dad. A trip to Yankees Stadium might be out of the question considering your baseball allegiances, but there’s hardly a lack of interesting adventures to find in New York. For the more relaxed Dad, start the day with dim sum in Chinatown, followed by a calm afternoon in the park. If your old man is all about the gastronomic pleasures, you could go one of two ways: walking food tour or a prix fixe menu planned at a fancy restaurant. But let’s say your father is more of the cultural individual, in which case a tour of one of the less visited museums would provide the perfect afternoon activities. But whatever you end up doing, the most important realization is that the most important part of the day is simply spending time together.

LA Neighborhoods: The ‘bu

The illustrious ‘bu aka Malibu aka Paradise.  What’s a typical day in the ‘bu consist of? Well, first you should throw on your frayed jean shorts, a printed tunic, favorite flats, cat eyed shades and don’t forget your surfboard on your way out the door. Put the top down on your convertible and lets head over to the Malibu Lumber Yard!  Malibu is THE place to get your tan on, shop on, drink on and grub on with the ocean by your side!

With such places like the Malibu Lumber Yard you literally don’t have to go far for the main necessities: beach view, retail, amazing restaurants and beach bars. So why go anywhere else right? Especially with the infamous east coast Cafe Habana (uhhh-maze-ing Cuban food!) who has finally found it’s west coast home! Another great spot to cruise on over to is the world famous Malibu Inn, not only a hotel but has a cool bar which grabs a lot of attention with it’s outdoor patio. A must stop on PCH for sure!

Now, on the flip side, if you’re looking for more sun,  you can lay your towel down at the famous  Point Dume. Point Dum is the most relaxing secluded (kind of secret) beach on the Malibu coast! Another great sunny adventure to try on a good day is a hike at Temescal Canyon. You can literally see ALL of Los Angeles from the top.  Malibu has the best of both worlds, so it all depends on your poison for the day. Insider tip: Always bring your 2 piece. Because you just never know where you might end up!
