The current show at the New Museum,”Mental States” by artist George Condo, packed the modern art museum on the Bowery with a cast of luminaries from the fashion and art worlds: artist Maurizio Cattelan, gallerist Gavin Brown, designers Marc Jacobs, Victoria Bartlett, and Adam Kimmel, actress Leelee Sobieski, and singer Kanye West, to name a few.
West — a big fan of Condo– asked the artist to paint the cover of his latest album, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy,” a sexually explicit but also humorous depiction of an interracial couple that got the CD banned in some stores.
Condo, known for his almost comic portraits, filled the main gallery with such images from floor to ceiling so it resembled a madhouse set loose on the walls. He also showed lesser known but no less dramatic golden sculptures/busts and brilliant abstracts (check the Hudson blog tomorrow to catch those!)
