The Art Man in Rock n’ Roll, Plus Fashion Versus Art/Music by Stella McCartney
Mick Jagger famous “arrest shot” from 1969
According to designer Stella McCartney, her dad (Beatle) Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger had a dealer in common. Richard Fraser, pictured here with Mick when he was arrested for supposed drug possession in 1969. Thing is, Fraser was NOT that kind of dealer. He dealt art and sold a lot of surrealist art to Jagger and McCartney in the swinging Brit Sixties.
Since a love of art seems to run in both the Jagger and McCartney lines, I asked Stella if fashion designers ranked up there with great painters, sculptors, or musicians. She told me this:
“I don’t know. I”ve always felt very uncomfortable calling myself an artist because the manifold of art is far greater than anything I could do. I think that fashion is art, I think it’s a way to draw in crowds and people are interested in fashion.
I think it’s not so much about their work being so beautiful that you would hang it on your wall, but it’s more about how Coco Chanel changed fashion in the female form; Yves Saint Laurent dresses. There are moments of greatness in fashion. There are moments of great surrealism.
There’s a relationship there between the arts, musicians, fashion designers and painters. I just think that a great painter is kind of just really great… a great songwriter.. It’s just a different league. Said that, Newton photography and Yves Saint Laurent, sometimes they feed off each other and create great things too. I think it really depends on who you are talking about I don’t like generalizing.”
