A couple nights ago, Kartell — the uber cool furniture design store based here in Soho– opened its doors to Whitewall Magazine, the art publication,  to showcase its Fall fashion issue. The mag features stories on Stella McCartney’s art collection, photos by Hedi Slimane, and a profile on colorful urban artist Kehinde Wiley.

But before I curled up with my issue later that evening, I was struck by all the eye popping pieces at Kartell! The brand, the biggest manufacturer of plastic furniture in the world, launched in Milan six decades ago. Kartell furniture doubles as art pieces themselves. You’ll find chairs — one named “Mr. Impossible” — by Philippe Starck and hanging mushroom shaped lamps by Ferruccio Laviani. Every so often, Kartell exhibits its collections at the Centre Pompidou in Paris of the Kunstalle in Bonn. Check out the Barbie chair in the Hudson slideshow, made last year to mark Barbie’s fiftieth anniversary. (The entire Milan store was decorated in pink like a Barbie dream house.)

Some of the pieces, like couches can run over a thousand dollars, but you can buy a Starck chair in the three hundred range! That’s not bad to fulfill the fantasy of sitting on a sturdy lollipop. It’s great fun! Check out Kartell NYC, 39 Greene Street, between Broome and Grand
