4th of July in LA

Independence Day: Just another great all American excuse to par-tay!  That said, let’s ring in this day of explosions in the sky with good company, a good shindig, and a great outfit.

Let’s stick to a loose and airy look this weekend.  The heat wave is here and since most of the activities are outdoor it’s best to try and stay cool. Put on your tie blouse with some Hudson shorts, and pair with your most comfortable wedges. A definite red, white and blue hit!

Now here are a few ideas to celebrate your day of independence:

1. Beach BBQ: Usually the best way to spend the 4th is at a BBQ near the beach with your best buds! Get a potluck going, pick a beach and you got yourself a party. Maybe even rent out a beach house! Some local beaches are also having fireworks and activities for the 4th like: Santa Monica, Huntington Beach, and Long Beach.

2. Hall & Oates: Kick it old school at the  Hollywood Bowl with Hall & Oates! Nothing like some good ol’ fashion American music and firework show to celebrate the 4th with a group of music loving friends.

3. Poolside: If sitting poolside is your forte try heading over to The Roosevelt on Sunday the 3rd for the “Wet Pool Party.” Celebrating the 4th a day earlier with Miguel Migs DJing sounds like a great independence plan to me!

4. Booze Cruise: Nothing better then relaxing on a boat and admiring the BEST firework display over the pacific ocean! If this sounds good to you then reserve your seats on the Fireworks cruise of Newport beach. Food + booze + fireworks + no after party clean up = a perfect day!

The Glasto Diary

Thursday

We arrived on a very muddy and wet Thursday night at Winding Lake farm, a spot off-site full of luxury winnebagos with hot showers and plasma TVs. Neighbours for the weekend included England football player Wayne Rooney and his glamourous wife Coleen. Beyoncé arrived there in a helicopter on the Sunday before she headlined the Pyramid stage.

Friday

All day Friday we were shooting with ES magazine with super hot model couple Sara Blomvquist and Jeremy Young. The shoot was very much a reportage of their trip to Glastonbury. We found some amazing shoot locations including an original airstream from the ’60s, the stone circle and Shangri-la… a very secret part of the Glastonbury site which comes alive after dark.

We sheltered from the rain and hung out backstage in the Hospitality bar and spotted Bono and his wife Alison Stewart having a quick break before his set with U2.

Saturday

We made sure to get a good spot for Pulp who had reformed for a special guest appearance at the Park stage. It was so packed that even Kate Moss wasn’t allowed past the security at the gate past security to see Jarvis. He seemed in his element performing to a crowd of over 30,000 die-hard fans. He was incredible and proved he still had his moves!

Sunday

On Sunday crowds including Brit Alexa Chung headed down to see Laura Marling in the blazing sunshine. Poppy Delevigne and Sara Blomqvist hung out backstage in their Hudson Hampton cuff shorts. We made our way over to the Other Stage and almost ended up on the stage with the huge range of wristbands I had amassed on my trip!

Sadly we had to leave before Beyoncé’s epic performance but will be watching it on BBC iPlayer from the comfort of my bed this evening!

LA Neighborhoods: The ‘bu

The illustrious ‘bu aka Malibu aka Paradise.  What’s a typical day in the ‘bu consist of? Well, first you should throw on your frayed jean shorts, a printed tunic, favorite flats, cat eyed shades and don’t forget your surfboard on your way out the door. Put the top down on your convertible and lets head over to the Malibu Lumber Yard!  Malibu is THE place to get your tan on, shop on, drink on and grub on with the ocean by your side!

With such places like the Malibu Lumber Yard you literally don’t have to go far for the main necessities: beach view, retail, amazing restaurants and beach bars. So why go anywhere else right? Especially with the infamous east coast Cafe Habana (uhhh-maze-ing Cuban food!) who has finally found it’s west coast home! Another great spot to cruise on over to is the world famous Malibu Inn, not only a hotel but has a cool bar which grabs a lot of attention with it’s outdoor patio. A must stop on PCH for sure!

Now, on the flip side, if you’re looking for more sun,  you can lay your towel down at the famous  Point Dume. Point Dum is the most relaxing secluded (kind of secret) beach on the Malibu coast! Another great sunny adventure to try on a good day is a hike at Temescal Canyon. You can literally see ALL of Los Angeles from the top.  Malibu has the best of both worlds, so it all depends on your poison for the day. Insider tip: Always bring your 2 piece. Because you just never know where you might end up!

Father’s Day LA

Father’s Day is this Sunday! What do you have planned for the #1 Dad in the world? Well, let us give you some tips and hints of where to take him and what to get him:

Where to go:
1. The all American dad: The Dodgers are actually playing on Sunday so hurry up and order those tickets and give your pops some live action baseball. And don’t forget the Dodger dog, popcorn and an ice cold beer!
2. California dreaming: All California dads love the beach! So take him to the Santa Monica Pier for some fun in the sun! There’s fishing, bike riding, volleyball, and lots of places to eat and shop. If  your dad’s totally hip you should take him for some surfing lessons, nothing like a daddy/daughter/son hang ten sesh!
3. For the stylish dad: Get him a new pair of jeans that aren’t from the 80s! We love this pair and this pair! Your mom will definitely thank you on this gift!

What to get him:
1. High tech: Get your Dad up to date and snag him an Ipad! For sure he’ll be the coolest Dad on the block reading his morning paper on his brand new Apple Ipad.
2. The Man Cave: Some dad’s got them and other dad’s want them. Why not give your dad what he’s been wanting but maybe not saying out loud, a mini fridge or poker table for the garage! Help him spruce up that Man Cave with his hobbies/essentials.
3. TV Land: All dad’s have one thing in common: They all love their TV programs! So why not get your dad that new TV or new sound system his been eyeing everytime you go to Best Buy.

What to Wear to the Beach

What To Wear to The Beach

While England’s beaches may not be as exotic as we would wish them to be, it’s now June, turning many people’s thoughts to summer holidays. Londoners in particular look forward to escaping the grime of the city for somewhere more breezy and relaxing, whether that be Bognor Regis or a far-flung desert island so long as there’s a spot on the beach to lay down a beach towel and the sun’s shining we’re happy. If in England – Brighton is a hot spot for its pleasure pier and alternative culture and Devon and Cornwall have a multitude of hidden treasures – the key is layers.

Start with a pair of Hudson’s Kenya Rolled Cargo shorts or Hampton Cuffed shorts and build up layers with bandeau tops and kaftans. Traveling to the Med? Channel Riviera chic with wooden-soled wedges, a one-piece in a knock-out colour such turquoise or coral and add your shorts over the top. For tropical climes, all you’ll need is your bikini – but it’s advisable to take a hat and a man’s white shirt to wear when the sun’s at its hottest.

Summer Picnic Guide

Los Angeles is definitely blessed with perfect picnic weather, not too hot and not too cold, but just right. The basics for any solid picnic is a no brainer: finger friendly foods, a large blanket, lots of napkins and the quintessential summer cocktails! If you want to get extra fancy, you can always add in plates, utensils and cups (All recyclable and biodegradable, of course). As for ‘what to wear’, you can throw on your favorite comfy maxi dress, a pair of relaxed chinos, woven sandals and a floppy sun hat…oh and don’t forget the shades!

Since location is everything in LA, here are some prime locations to get your picnic on:
Griffith Park: Located in Los Feliz and can pretty much accommodate any sized picnic party. This vast oasis is home to the LA zoo, horse trails and the observatory (hello, best view in town). With such amenities, your picnic is just the beginning of an amazing all-day, action-packed adventure.

Elysian Park: Yes, home of the legendary “Love in LA” peace celebration in the 1960’s. Elysian Park is filled with not only history, but awesome hiking trails and beautifully arranged plants. A great setting for any picnic addict – you might even get a view of Dodger Stadium if you venture far enough!

The Beach: From Venice to Manhattan to Malibu, the beach is always a good option. For non-grass lovers and for those that prefer a cool breeze and front row ocean views, this is perfect! You can literally plop down your blanket anywhere, but the best option for sure is the fire pits! Can’t go wrong with a sunset and s’mores…YUM!

Cinespia: Operated only in the summer time, this picnic + movie deal is something everyone in LA should try at least once! Hosted in the iconic Hollywood Forever cemetery, this event screens some of the best classic films such as “Young Frankenstein” and “Airplane”. The major bonus is that it’s BYOB, so while the lines may be long, it’s absolutely worth the wait!

Tracey Emin – Love Is What You Want

She’s arguably one of the most notorious, controversial and celebrated artists of the London art scene and the Southbank’s Hayward Gallery is now putting on a major retrospective. Tracey Emin’s Love is What You Want is opening on 18th May and it’s definitely one to see. Every period of her career is covered – see paintings, drawings, photography, textiles, video and sculptures, as well as lesser known early works, and her recent large-scale installations and outdoor sculptures. The main draw behind her work is her uncompromising openness. Oftentimes, intimate and sexual elements of her personal life are laid bare for the viewer, placing her in the pantheon of the ‘personal political’ feminist artists.

Chilly Gonzales at Koko

On 5th May at Camden’s gig and club venue Koko, dark horse Chilly Gonzales played out a mammoth set with two pianos and two drum kits.  The Canadian (whose real name is Jason Beck) gained followers as a behind-the-scenes magic producer, working on megahits as Feist’s Let It Die. However a heady mix of stomping good beats and lyrical self-deprecation, humour and satire, fused with multiple personas which play up to his own traits – inclucing his Jewishness – have made his own music deliciously infectious. Being a classically trained musician, he is able to flit seamlessly between genres.  To date, he has released more than seven albums covering everything including rap, instrumental, classical, soft pop and electronic dance.  Oh, what a night!
