Wayne Hemingway is the kind of designer who has made his mark in all possible arenas. A child of the 60′s, he, with his wife Gerardine, founded the iconic fashion label Red or Dead from a stall in the famous Camden market. From there, they went on to win the prestigious British Fashion Council’s Streetstyle Designer of the Year award three years in a row (1996 – 1998).  It would seem fitting to say he hasn’t looked back since, but the smattering of old photos and timelines that adorn his websites suggest otherwise. The Hemingways, in fact, take pleasure at looking back, and then moving forwards onto the next project.

Nowadays Wayne and Gerardine keep busy at Hemingway Design, an anti-elitist design studio specialising in affordable social design, where they’ve already won a number of awards for their Staiths South Bank project in Tyneside. They’re also the co-founders of the annual music and fashion festival Vintage at Goodwood, which this year (its second year) takes place at the Southbank Centre. Celebrating the 40s through to the 80s, yet again, the Hemingways have simultaneously managed to capture the zeitgeist – a pleasure for looking back.
