With the arrival of June 21st comes the official beginning of summer, which gives city residents a short window of time to cram in as many warm weather excursions as possible. Weekend trips to the Hamptons and Fire Island may be already planned, but for those who are enjoying a stay-cation this summer, there’s hardly a lack of fun to be found.
- Two of NYC’s hottest ice cream trucks are leaning towards the brick and mortar route to accommodate the sheer number of sweet treat lovers. Lucky East Village residents have both the Van Leeuwen and Big Gay Ice Cream stores opening shop on E 7th street this month!
- As a celebration of the debut of Section 2 of the High Line, The Lot is a temporary space featuring public art, free events, along with a selection of food trucks including Coolhaus, Kelvin Natural Slush Co., Red Hook Lobster, Taim Mobile, and The Taco Truck. Currently, Tom Colicchio’s Colicchio & Sons created an outdoor bar showcasing a special beer made specifically for the High Line, which makes it a clear must-try. The Lot at the High Line is open daily from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM Sunday through Wednesday, and 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM Thursday through Saturday.
- If you’re desperate for sand, pick one of the Water Taxi Beaches and set up shop for the day. Governors Island, Long Island City, and the South Street Seaport each boast their own versions of the fake beach, along with the requisite summer cook out snacks like hot dogs and hamburgers.
- When the heat just becomes absolutely unbearable, throw your beach towel and sunscreen into a bag and trek up to the Bronx to check out this year’s Floating Pool at Barretto Point Park. Originally a barge, the pool enjoyed a renovation a few years ago to help city residents deal with the concrete summer jungle. Now, each summer the Floating Pool Lady serves as a respite for residents, taking up residency on the waterways of one of NYC’s boroughs.
